Creating a STICK INSECT Lamp

Creating a STICK INSECT Lamp

The Stick Insect Lamp departs from conventional lighting design, inhabiting the delicate boundary between sculpture and illumination. Inspired by my family’s fascination with insects—their quiet mystique and their essential role within nature—the project began with a small but meaningful gesture: a gift of five living stick insects from my design partner and friend, Andrea Cingoli.

The design explores a simple yet unconventional principle. While most lighting objects are conceived within the horizontal logic of the X and Y axes, Stick Insect introduces the Z axis as an active dimension, allowing light to extend laterally through space. The lamp can therefore inhabit multiple orientations: standing horizontally as a floor lamp, suspended as a chandelier, or resting low near seating elements such as sofas and chairs.

At its core are three elongated lighting elements inspired by turn-of-the-century Edison tubes, each measuring 50 cm in length. These LED tubes are enriched with custom handmade Murano glass, individually crafted by Venetian artisans, introducing a layer of Italian craftsmanship that softens the technological precision of the light source.

The thorax body is divided into front and rear segments that rotate to adjust the direction of light, while the central spine remains fixed, preserving the purity of the lateral composition.

Laser-cut steel legs rotate 180°, allowing the object to stabilize itself across various surfaces and spatial conditions. These articulated limbs transform the lamp from a simple lighting device into a quietly animate presence—an insect-like creature that settles gently within the interior.

By shifting between the X, Y, and Z axes, the Stick Insect Lamp redefines the role of lighting: no longer a secondary element of illumination, but a protagonist within the spatial narrative. Through this piece, we aim to create an object that merges nature, technology, and Murano glass craftsmanship, bringing a subtle sense of character and mystique into contemporary interiors.
