KOBRA Lighting

Date

2017

I have always disliked wires, switches, and light elements within a lamp. Inspired by Jonathan Ive of Apple design fame and the elegance of a snake, I envisioned a lamp with a unique body where the wire elements are integrated into the stability structure, and the illumination is unified into a monocot form.
One of the challenges we encountered is that most light designs consist of solid elements that can pose a danger if a child accidentally crashes into them. To address this, we created a lamp with structural stability in a tubular format, covered with soft polyurethane. The wire is concealed within the same polyurethane casing, and the final light elements are integrated into the structural body itself.
From an observational standpoint, the entire design appears as one large tubular structure. When connecting the wires to a power socket, the bending of the design becomes part of the lamp's aesthetic. This design can also be suspended from the ceiling, where the protruding connection becomes a unique visual feature.
The inspiration for this project came from observing the ARCO lamp designed by Giacomo Castiglioni, a significant 20th-century product designer from Italy. While the ARCO lamp was ahead of its time, we aim to push the boundaries of floor lamp design into the 21st and 22nd centuries, focusing on simplicity and unification. We believe lighting no longer needs to be separate elements; a unified body design aligns with simplifying modern complexities and creates a more pleasing geometry.
Additionally, we have introduced accessories that can be slipped over the design, like a condom, allowing for alternative colors to be added to the lamp's monotone appearance.
