H U T O N G
Creazione SUGO turns its gaze toward Beijing’s disappearing hutongs—the intimate labyrinths of narrow alleys and courtyard dwellings that once defined the rhythm of the city. In these spaces, bicycles once glided slowly between brick walls, neighbors lived within arm’s reach, and urban life unfolded at a human scale. Today, as Beijing accelerates toward relentless modernization, many of these fragile urban fabrics quietly vanish.
HUTONG emerges as a poetic tribute to this fading architecture of proximity.
The sculpture is constructed upon a 3D-printed metal matrix, developed with an Italian manufacturer after extensive research. Its structure is derived directly from the masterplan of San Miao Jie Hutong, one of the oldest surviving hutong districts in Beijing. The grid—once a living neighborhood—becomes an abstracted urban skeleton.
From this metallic framework rise thirty-seven pure crystal air-purification rods, each representing an individual dwelling within the historic alley network. Their vertical presence recalls the quiet density of courtyard houses, while their crystalline surfaces capture and refract light like fragments of memory suspended in space.
The rods vary in height and tone, allowing each HUTONG composition to be uniquely configured. As their arrangement shifts, so too does the character of the light—transforming the sculpture into a luminous micro-city where reflection, shadow, and atmosphere constantly evolve.
Part architectural model, part illumination sculpture, HUTONG becomes a metaphor for the fragile transformation of cities: a delicate balance between preservation and progress.
Only 50 pieces will ever be produced worldwide. Each is handcrafted to order, requiring months of meticulous fabrication—an intentional resistance to the anonymity of mass production.
With HUTONG, Creazione SUGO captures a disappearing urban poetry and translates it into light: a contemporary artifact where heritage, technology, and memory coexist in crystalline form.
